By newsadmin at 25 November, 2009, 4:55 am In 1993 I saw Bal Thackeray being interviewed on Zee TV (satellite TV channels had just been introduced in Pakistan). I wish every Pakistani and Indian Muslim had seen that interview. It confirmed what I’ve always known: that Indian Muslims would have been annihilated if India had not been partitioned. When the compere asked him why his party activists had violated the Supreme Court’s order about the Babri Masjid, he said (in Hindi), “The Supreme Court’s order was not to do any construction at the mosque, we didn’t do any construction, we simply did a lot ... Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Monday found himself at the centre of a political storm after comments he made about his identity upset a hardline regional Hindu party. The 36-year-old batsman, who at the weekend marked 20 years in Test cricket, said in interviews with television channels that he was an "extremely proud" Maharashtrian, referring to his home state of which Mumbai is the capital. "But I am an Indian first. And Mumbai belongs to all Indians," he added. His declaration -- in a country where regional identity is still fiercely guarded -- provoked the ire of the founder of far-right Shiv Sena ... Read Full Story

The Indian cricket board Sunday distanced itself from spokesperson Rajiv Shukla's comments on Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray for picking on Sachin Tendulkar. In a press statement, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Mahohar said vice-president Shukla's comments were not made on behalf of the board. "Rajeev Shukla has reacted to the comments made by the Shiv Sena chief on Sachin Tendulkar in his individual capacity, and not on behalf of the BCCI," the statement said. Thackeray, last week, had taken an umbrage at Tendulkar's statement that he was "a proud Maharashtrian but an Indian first" and "Mumbai belongs to ... Read Full Story
