Quality binoculars are pricey because of the optics involved which allow the bird watcher to see the birds from a distance with great clarity. There are a whole lot of varieties in binoculars, and price range too with the top-of-the-range versions able to be used in complete darkness; others can capture images, both still and moving.

A bird watching journal is also a nice gift to get because most ornithologists record what bird species they have seen and how many there were.

For a gift with a difference, why not pay for an annual subscription to a bird watching magazine, preferably one they already read. Published monthly (sometimes quarterly), they're able to see pictures of birdies which frequent distant places around the world.

The ultimate gift for a bird watcher can be a bird watching vacation, provided you've the available funds for this expensive gift. Of all the varieties of birds, there are still vast numbers that live outside of America although some might visit during certain seasons.

Unless you talk to the recipient first and interpret their needs, you can never determine which gifts would be most appreciated. A short conversation will already give you a lot of ideas, and then you barely have to pick the right one that's within your budget and meaningful to the person.
