Shopping for a Camera

Like others here, I was also in the market for an HD camcorder to take advantage of my HDTV, and because I didn't want to spend $300 for a standard-def camcorder now, only to have to upgrade a year or two later...so I took the plunge. I researched digital cameras for several months to find THE one for me, a digicamaphobe.THE camera is - the does it all AND at a reasonbable price - Minolta s414. Yes I sold all my DSLR equipment after I bought this camera.It's that good for what I needed.The only negative worth talking about is some minimal purple fringe at extra high contrast type scenes. I was concerned about focusing accuracy and in low light.The camera excels at both. I recently bought this camera at a local dive shop and was able to use it on a dive and a couple snorkel trips in Hawaii. Previously, I was using an underwater camera bag (~$30) with a Sony DSC-V1 (5MP pro-sumer) to take snorkeling photos.I was able to get some great photos in the process.Unfortunately, that solution made it difficult to operate the camera, sometimes the bag plastic would warp/defocus the shot, and was a bit risky.I would also not be willing to take it on Scuba dives.The... Buy the kit with EF-S 18-55mm IS lens instead. The new 18-55mm IS lens is a gem and the kit only costs $60 more. This lens is much improved from the last generation and is even optically better than the Canon 17-85mm IS lens that costs many times more. Even if you decide that the kit lens is not for you, you can resell it for much more than $60. So why only four stars? This is a great little camera; it takes high quality stills and amazingly good videos. I got this gadget as a replacement for my old sony, and so far have been very hapy with both the new functionality and the quality of output. My only comment is that the software included with the camera is largely useless. The video produced is in the MP4 format (which is basically QuickTime on steroids) so you will need to get a decent MP4 player. I’ve downloaded a MP4 player called ‘mpegable’, which... This is a tough review to write, as it could take far more space than alotted. Here is the short version... Some brands of digicams sport German or other Euro lenses. Some will no doubt argue, but after 35 years of being an active photographer, and a tech type of person, I feel that nobody makes high end lenses better than Canon makes them, and nobody makes more lenses that qualify as high end than Canon either.
