You know what they feel like: those gripping, throbbing pains above your eyebrows, on top of your head, the aching of your teeth, blinding lights and blaring sounds. Sinus pressure! Sinus surgery should be the last measure taken in your attempts to lessen the grips of those terrible sinus headaches. Surgery cannot be undone, and while severe complications and side effects could happen, there is very little chance of getting back what is "cut out." Before sinus surgery is even considered, there are a number of steps that have to be taken. If you are truly concerned  about your health, your well being, and your ... Read Full Story

Thanks to Darryl for the info on this new procedure. A good article can be found on the main Georgetown University Hospital website, and is entitled,  “ Sinus Sufferers Breathe Sigh of Relief with New Balloon Therapy” .  The article doesn’t have a named author, but it can be inferred from the tone, lack of alternative perspectives, and location, that it is written by them. Regardless, it provides information about a possible alternative to sinus surgery. The procedure is similar to angioplasty for the heart, and is called sinusplasty. Under general anesthesia, a balloon is inserted into the blocked nasal passageway, slowly inflated, deflated, ... Read Full Story

If someone asked me today, “What are five ways to stop sinus pressure,” I would answer with the following from my experience: Prevent allergies. Allergies come from many sources. They can be environmental, house-related, nature-based, or based on what you eat, touch, or smell. Prevent congestion with meds. Congestion clogs your sinus passages. The membranes swell and the mucus cannot drain. This leads to pressure. Use OTC nasal decongestants for the “short term.” Prevent congestion naturally…look Read more at  Sinussurgery Read Full Story

that I have my life back that I am whole that those undergoing surgery, or in recovery right now need our empathy and support that patience is bred in me once again that we move on that memories leave us, but the lesson must not that the bad habits I’ve developed must go that the good habits I’ve learned must stay that I must be again Today was a very good day. This afternoon was a great afternoon. But, I didn’t do anything to push  myself. I just sat, talked, and read. Read Full Story

I just had my 3 week follow up with my surgeon. I was a little nervous before going in because I want this to be over, but I want everything to be checked, a few questions answered, and the pain gone. A nurse blew some local anesthesia down each nostril. It tasted awful! Yuk! It numbed the back of my throat too and made it hard to swallow. Then the nurse took a little metal cart and put it beside me with a scope on it. She rattled around in a drawer and I glanced to see scissors and saws and I was really ... Read Full Story

I just ran across this article on sinus treatments that is brief but well written. It covers treatments in two stages but urges you to do something about it, and not treat it as a common cold: http://www.browse24.net/beware-of-sinus-infection.html/comment-page-1#comment-260 . The second part really has some good advice if normal treatments aren’t working. Read Full Story

I spent the day Tuesday reflecting on the previous week's recovery from sinus surgery. A few lessons came to mind. The first is that healing is a slow, mysterious, and sometimes revealing process. I was able to literally step aside from the normal worldly spin and watch and listen. I learned about my children's independence, boyish natures, need for constant food, and some unmentionables that will be fixed shortly! I learned how creative and dynamic, organized and empathetic my wife was, which puts me to shame. I learned how much time we can waste each day on the computer, instead with the friends and ... Q. I get pounding headaches at least twice a month and end up in the emergency room being treated for pain and nausea. These headaches suck the life out of me. My doctor thinks it is sinusitis, so he prescribes antibiotics all the time, but I don't want to take too many. Are there other ways I can make the headaches stop? — Anonymous

Cerebral angioinvasion is a fatal complication of disseminated aspergillosis and has been rarely described in diabetic population in the absence of ketoacidosis. We present a case of invasive fungal sinusitis in a 79 year old diabetic man who presented with chronic frontal headaches. Despite appropriate medical and surgical treatment, the disease progressed and the patient eventually succumbed to a fatal ruptured mycotic aneurysm. We emphasize...
