Three more Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts plan to open for the season this week. Heavenly on Tahoe's south shore will open Friday, while Squaw Valley USA and Northstar-at-Tahoe just north of Tahoe will open Saturday. Boreal atop Donner Summit kicked off the season Oct. 9, and Mt. Rose Ski-Tahoe southwest of Reno opened Oct. 30. The resorts will be open daily with limited operations until they receive more snow. North Lake Tahoe work this morning to just under a foot of new snow (10 inches) at the upper elevations following a powerful storm that hit the region on Friday making today’s opening day at Squaw Valley USA and Northstar-at-Tahoe . The water clarity of Lake Tahoe decades ago was greater than 100 feet deep, but environmental degradation, caused in part by development, has taken its toll. Today the clarity is less than 70 feet. Invasive species, including Asian clams, and green algae also threaten the nationÕs second-deepest lake, according to a report last year by researchers at the University of California, Davis. These are reasons enough for Congress to swiftly approve bipartisan legislation introduced Tuesday by members of the Nevada and California congressional delegations to restore the lake, reduce the risk of area fires and preserve wildlife in the surrounding Tahoe Basin. Lake Tahoe fish hatchery will become home to science exhibit Associated Press TAHOE CITY - A historic Lake Tahoe fish hatchery will become home to a public science exhibit. University of California, Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center officials say they secured sufficient funding to open the exhibit in July 2010 in Tahoe City. UC Davis owns and manages the Field Station, formerly dubbed the Tahoe City Hatchery. The nearly 90-year old building underwent a $2.1 million renovation in 2008.
