Ironically, Thieves Stole $1 Million in Jewels During the Screening of 'The Bling Ring'

Chopard is the official sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival.
Coincidence or irony?

More that $1 million worth of jewelry was stolen from a hotel in Cannes the same night as the screening of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring. In the film, fame and money hungry teens wait until celebrities are attending major red carpet events in order to break into their mansions and steal everything from designers clothes, shoes, and fancy jewels.

It looks like someone decided to take that plotline a bit too seriously.

The jewels belonged to a Swiss jewelry company called Chopard, which is the official sponsor for the Cannes Film Festival. The gems were to be loaned to celebrities like Julianne Moore and Cindy Crawford as accessories for major parties and red carpet appearances.

French police say that they are still investigating and trying to track down suspects.

It looks like Coppola might have some pretty good material for a possible Bling Ring
follow-up.
