A tsunami has many similarities to what it was like when Michael Jackson left our world on June 25, 2009. First the ocean is calm and the waves recede, much like information about his concert tour came in small waves as reported on this blog.  Similarly, a tsunami offers very few warning signs to the untrained eye. A few fish flop around on the shore as the tide recedes and many become curious and explore the waterless shore.  Then suddenly a huge wall of water a few miles a way approaches and shortly thereafter all hell breaks loose! A strange thing happened to SongChannels.com ... Read Full Story

There will never be another Michael Jackson ever again, he was one of the greatest entertainers ever!  I appreciated Michael Jackson’s enormous talent as a kid and had a unique encounter with the Jackson 5 when I was 11. In Baldwin Hills, California in 1971 the Jackson 5 were sounding great while walking rank and file into my local grocery store as I was at the stand reading the latest Tiger Beat Magazine .  I first saw Michael Jackson approach as they were singing their recent hit “ ABC “.  My jaw dropped and I watched in awe as the Jackson 5 walked past ... Back in the early 1980’s when high quality men were more plentiful, I met latin jazz guitarist Jeff Linsky at an ASCAP party gathering in Beverly Hills. I was living in Rancho Palos Verdes at the time, in the same condo complex with tennis star Tracy Austin who sometimes played tennis with Navratilova there. Back in the 80’s Jeff Linsky was obviously going to be a renown guitarist. He came over for dinner and serenaded me. We met up just one other time back then in Manhattan Beach, because this man is always traveling around the world on tours. Then in 1997 Jeff came ... Read Full Story

Two of pop music’s most enduring and successful bands are reuniting since their 2005 tour starting in Orange Beach, Alabama.  Earth Wind & Fire recently performed for President Obama on February 22, 2009 as one of his favorite bands will play 30 concerts with the band Chicago beginning June 5th. Earth, Wind & Fire’s founding members have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  Chicago, known for its great horn musicians and arrangements, has sold more than 100,000,000 records and 25 of its 30 albums have been certified platinum.  I chose a few of EW&F’s videos for SongChannel’s top pick videos ... I’ve been doing a little research on a few of those I played viola with in youth symphonies and music camps in the 1970’s.  Back then a common statement you’d hear was that only 2% of all symphonic based musicians from their youth would ever go on to have a career in that medium. Another rumor I’d hear later was that violists were going to go extinct due to their being phased out of new symphonic music. I clearly remember playing at the Merimblum Youth Symphony Pathfinder with Darius Campo , near Hollywood CA who was the first chair violinist. In the late 1960’s, ... Read Full Story

It’s been 10 years since Sade released the masterful Lovers Rock, but listeners could be forgiven for assuming that its follow-up, Soldier Of Love, was recorded days or weeks after that Grammy-winning triumph: The new disc picks up exactly where its predecessor left off. Lead singer Sade Adu once again proves a master of subtle seduction and a genius at understated sexuality. An album of hushed intensity and powerful quiet, Soldier sometimes...

Sade, the queen of understatement, and her minimalist musicians stir up some more quiet storms on Soldier of Love, their sixth studio release. Ten years since her last studio album, Sade continues to fascinate with her kaleidoscopic changes in look, style and sound. When it comes to being a chameleon, she stands alone. Perhaps only Enya, or the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

Since this seems to be Sade week for me, just thought I’d share a great performance from 2008 of Rahsaan Patterson performing one my favorites from her, “Stronger Than Pride”. I’m definitely looking forward to a new project from him this year. Enjoy!
