I started to simply put this book in the Books of
Interest section, but I feel it's worth a blog entry if for no other
reason that it should be archived somewhere. (I feel similarly
about Got Game, but I'll save that for another day.)
I was turned on to The Cluetrain Manifesto, the End of Business as Usual during
an OPAL session by Michael Stephens, one of the most eloquent voices in
our library community, calling on us to embrace emerging technologies
and to recognize that much of the... Read Full Story
I just started reading the cluetrain manifesto: the end of business as usual . I had heard of the book many times, and having now started reading it, am amazed at how it’s just the right time to read it, for me. It all began before Y2K, with a website put together by industry insiders at www.cluetrain.com . The book itself was published in 2000, though it seems like it was written today. The essence of it is that markets are conversations, that the Internet is about giving people a voice... Read Full Story

After twelve years of planning, the Carvers Bay Branch of the
Georgetown County Library system is finally complete and open to the
public. Located at 13048 Choppee Road, the 7,550 square-foot library
will be the gem of Carvers Bay, an area Dwight McInvaill, director of
the Georgetown County Library System, describes as one of the county’s
most rural, poor and isolated areas. Prior to the building of
this new facility, Carvers Bay residents had
to drive anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to reach... Read Full Story
So, I’m in my branch library the other day, looking for a book that I now, having searched the catalog without success, realize I will need to obtain through interlibrary loan. I’m a librarian, so the term “ILL” means something to me…although I suspect it’s an alien notion to other customers here in the branch. And no wonder, because as I’m about to discover, this library doesn’t “do” interlibrary loan. I have my book’s title. I have the author, and plenty of other details about... Read Full Story

My colleague Deborah sat down in my office and said, “You
know, this whole social networking thing, doesn’t this seem a lot like the old
days when we got together on friends’ front porches in the summer evenings to
chat, drink a little beer, talk politics, clear our heads a bit after the
day?”
Of course the days she was reminiscing about were college
days and maybe our heads weren’t so clear, but you have the picture. I remember... Read Full Story
World Digital Library My boyfriend keeps harassing me to start a blog. I’ve finally agreed to it but I still have absolutely no idea what to blog about. So I figure, being a library student I may just join the hoards of other library people and blog about libraries. http://www.wdl.org/en/ This is probably my favourite thing that is going on in the library world about now. This is the link for the World Digital Library, a pretty monumental effort at digitization and a project that to me... Read Full Story
Welcome to the new South Carolina Public Libraries portal!
This will be an area for us to share information for and about public
libraries in South Carolina. For awhile, you'll notice that most
of the content comes from members of the South Carolina State Library ,
primarily from staff in Library Development Services, but as we grow
and word spreads, we expect that information will come straight from
the libraries themselves.
It will be a place to highlight special events, share new... Read Full Story
