Get on the Cluetrain

I started to simply put this book in the Books of Interest section, but I feel it's worth a blog entry if for no other reason that it should be archived somewhere.  (I feel similarly about Got Game, but I'll save that for another day.)

I was turned on to The Cluetrain Manifesto, the End of Business as Usual during an OPAL session by Michael Stephens, one of the most eloquent voices in our library community, calling on us to embrace emerging technologies and to recognize that much of the public has already done so.  We are thrilled that Michael, along with Jenny Levine (The Shifted Librarian) and Stephen Abram (Vice President of Innovation for SirsiDynix) will be coming to our first technology institute to share their insights on September 13, 2006.  More information on that will be coming soon, but for now, back to the book.

The Cluetrain Manifesto began as a website, a discussion between four leaders in the technology world, resulting in 95 theses on how the Internet has changed the market forever.   The book extends the conversation and provides a more complete explanation of their points.  Better yet, it isn't written in "corporate-speak," but in real, easy to understand, often funny language.  It's up-front, sometimes in-your-face, but the message is clear.  We have to wake up to the reality that our markets, our patrons, have changed.

From the website
"A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter—and getting smarter faster than most companies."

What can libraries learn from a book on corporate America?  Consider how you create and market services to your community and consider the following 3 statements from the 95 theses:
6.  The Internet is enabling conversations among human beings that were simply not possible in the era of mass media.
9.  These networked conversations are enabling powerful new forms of social organization and knowledge exchange to emerge.
18.  Companies that don't realize their markets are now networked person-to-person, getting smarter as a result and deeply joined in conversation are missing their best opportunity.

Replace the word "companies" with "libraries" and the word "markets" with "patrons", and I believe you'll find much in this book that relates directly to the way we create and provide services.
