Lexus RX 400h

The Lexus RX 400h debuted for 2006, and though it hasn't changed much, we felt it was a good time to revisit this old friend given the fact that gas prices are nearly double what they were back then and it remains the only hybrid choice among midsize luxury SUVs (although there's now a Cadillac Escalade hybrid for those wanting something a bit bigger).

Audi A5
Performance

In real-world driving, we found that the A5's direct-injected V6 delivers an appropriately stern kick when called upon, particularly at higher speeds. However, the tri-mode transmission on our tester didn't feel quite ready for prime time — upshifts and downshifts alike were sporadically clunky even in normal Drive mode, while selecting Sport made matters worse. Furthermore, although gearchanges were exceptionally swift in Manual mode, full-throttle upshifts at redline would sometimes elicit a perceptible jolt. At least the manual mode's automatic rev-matching feature guaranteed smooth downshifts on demand.

Midsize wagons are like Zubaz pants — they used to be all the rage, but now Americans avoid them like the plague. Fifteen years ago, the Accord and Camry were available as wagons, providing a highly practical combination of family-sedan goodness and station wagon functionality. Today, wagons are stigmatized as mommy mobiles that don't meet contemporary standards of cool, and the closest thing we've got to a replacement is the ubiquitous crossover SUV.

Dodge Journey R/T
Performance

The Journey's performance at the gas pump was no better. EPA estimates are 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. On a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back, we averaged 20.3 mpg, while the fuel log showed 18.2 mpg for the Journey's entire two-week time in our hands. That mileage isn't any better than larger and quicker crossovers like the Ford Flex. By comparison, the similarly sized Toyota RAV4 V6 puts up a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds and EPA combined fuel economy of 22 mpg.
