Types Of Malware And How They Attack

Malware refers to harmful software or scripts that are affect computers. Malware such as Trojan horses and viruses will be described.

The word malware is a shortened phrase for “malicious software”. Generally, malware are programs that cause damage to computer networks, storage systems, servers and computers.

Viruses have affected many people’s computers and servers. These are scripts which multiply and spread files between computers. Files are multiplied and spread without the user being aware of what is happening. You may define a virus as software that enters the computer through deception and doing harm to your data. This may be your opinion, but this not a correct definition of a virus. A virus does not destroy data, but it becomes a nuisance through multiplying and spreading, and preventing your programs from running properly. In the course of stopping the virus, we may accidentally destroy some data in the computer. This does not mean that the virus is responsible for destroying the data. E-mail attachments containing executable files are often infected with viruses, as well as downloads from unknown sources.

Worms are a variation of viruses. A worm produces multiple copies of itself in a computer, or in each of the computers in a network.

How can you destroy a computer virus? There is a lot of software that can be used to detect and destroy viruses. Anti-virus software works by scanning and destroying all the malicious scripts in the computer. Software with similar behaviour to virus scripts will also be destroyed. You should protect your computer from viruses by installing virus protection software. You must also desist from downloading executable files. Executable files are delivered through e-mail attachments or internet downloads. Downloading executable files from unknown sources is risky. E-mail programs like Gmail and yahoo can scan files for viruses.

Another type of malware is a “Trojan horse”. A Trojan horse is a stealth program that tries to enter the computer without the user’s permission or knowledge. The word Trojan horse is derived from a Greek myth about characters that pass through security walls by presenting or hiding themselves in a different form. One example of a Trojan horse is the ’swen virus’ that presented itself as a Microsoft application.

Trojan horses will destroy, sniff or change the data, as soon as they enter the hard drive. Sensitive information like passwords, credit card details and pin numbers can destroyed or stolen. Trojan horses are most dangerous of all malware. Viruses and worms may be a nuisance, or they can prevent programs from functioning normally. All kinds of malware are therefore undesirable.
