I can say one thing about Steamboatians…they sure know how to have fun in the middle of winter. Attending the Winter Carnival in Steamboat is sure to bring a smile to your face as you watch the many outdoor activities involving downhill skiers, children on skis being pulled by horses, obstacle courses for tykes on skis and many other contests.

This cape crusader with his magic wand in hand is attempting to ski behind a galloping horse in hopes of spearing five rings awaiting him further down his course.

The little fellow had lots of cheering from the crowds as he flew down Lincoln Avenue toward his task. What determination this little guy had!!

Carl Howelsen.” The Flying Norseman”, started the first Winter Carnival in 1914 as a kind of a cure-all for cabin fever that residents suffered in the dead of winter. Today the event features ski races, ski jumping, chariot racing, street events, the shovel race, dog sled pull and the unique High School Marching Band on skis! Ending the week long celebration is the ever-popular night show with fireworks, synchronized skiing demonstrations and the famous Lighted Man. The Winter Carnival is traditionally held in early February each year and is organized by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Sugar and spice and everything nice is what little girls are made of, but the little girls here in Steamboat are just as competitive as the boys.

Another contestant as he soars down the main street of Steamboat.

He spears the first of the five rings on this obstacle course.

This is just one of the snow sculptors that line street on Lincoln Avenue during the 2009 Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Horseback riders return to the start to pick up more skiers during the street events at the 96th Annual Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival.

Of course, not everyone is enthused with the festivities.

The Steamboat Gondola Car, perhaps waiting on a Snow Princess.

The downhill jump event where many records have been broke.

I hope you enjoyed this segment about Steamboat’s 96th Winter Carnival. This year work pulled me away from many activities but I’m looking forward to next year’s events, camera ready and a smile plastered on my face.

Happy Skiing!!!
