The song originally was on the album Stephanie and helped launch the career of both artists, and remains one of the best known songs performed by both the artists.

Teddy Pendergrass, an R&B legend, passed away on January 13, 2010 at the age of 59 after a battle with colon cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer last year, and apparently had trouble recovering from a surgery. He died at Bryn Mawr Hospital outside of Philadelphia. He was best known for his hit song, "If You Don't Know Me By Now."
