Jockey Calvin Borel will try to achieve an unprecedented personal Triple Crown sweep upon different horses Saturday when he tries to ride favorite Mine That Bird to victory in the Belmont Stakes. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is a 2-1 favorite for the 1 1/2-mile concluding race in the US equestrian Triple Crown after settling for second at the Preakness last month to Borel-ridden filly Rachel Alexandra. Borel sparked 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird from last to victory at the Derby five... Read Full Story
New Mexico's trainer Chip Woolley brought his first Kentucky Derby starter to the 135th running of Roses. Driving 21 hours from New Mexico, with his trainer Woolley nursing a broken leg from a winter motorcycle accident, this colt was far from a favorite in this year's race.At 50-1 odds, Mine That Bird was clearly an underdog. An inexpensive find who originally sold for only $9500 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale, Mine That Bird more than earned his keep today with a stunning... Read Full Story
Finally! The long awaited photos from my anniversary trip to the Derby. My husband spent 4 years at Fort Knox and was an old pro at the Derby action, but he never had a seat where we were! We were lucky to be in the Clubhouse, section 316, row A and directly across from the finish line. Here are some highlights: The Oaks: We arrived in KY at around 1pm (after a 10 hr drive) and we were off to the races! This is the race that is held the day before for a different class of horses. Still fun... Read Full Story
Maybe the boys got lucky. Rachel Alexandra rolled to victory in the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks on Friday, crushing the field by 20 1/4 lengths and perhaps stamping herself as the best 3-year-old horse in the country, male or female. Rachel Alexandra, with jockey Calvin Borel up, stalked Gabby's Golden Gal along the backstretch then easily moved to the front with little urging from Borel. She poured it on in the stretch, widening the gap as 100,000 spectators roared her to the finish line in the... Read Full Story

Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Suerte Equine’s Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird put in his final major prep for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes 2009 by working a half-mile in :50 under jockey Calvin Borel on Monday at Churchill Downs. Jockey Calvin Borel backtracked Mine That Bird to the frontside and then loped around to the backstretch for the work that clockers caught in splits of :13.80, :26.60, :38.40, the half in :50 with a five-eighths gallop out time of 1:02.20 and six furlongs in 1:15... As the Kentucky Derby approaches, sports bettors gather their statistics to make the right picks for this year's race. During last year's Kentucky Derby, Street Sense got ahead and won at 2:02.17. The year before that, Barbaro won in 2:01.36. It is undetermined as to whether this year's winner will be faster than 2:01.50. Some experts say that Big Brown could win the Kentucky Derby this year. However, the unbeaten Florida Derby winner will have to contend with some others if he is to win the... Read Full Story
At one point, Street Sense was in 19th place out of the 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby, but when they hit the final wire, it was Street Sense in front with some ease.
Jockey Calvin Borel ran a perfect race for Street Sense, which showed an incredible burst of speed late in the race to capture horse racing's biggest prize. Read Full Story
