If your loved one dies while serving in the United States Military, whether they are killed in action or by accident, you will receive a letter of condolence from the President.  Presidents have been doing this since Abraham Lincoln.  If your loved one serves in the military and kills themselves , however, you will get many of the same things that other families get, but you will not receive a letter from the Commander in Chief.  That has been true at least since the Clinton administration. I only met her once. She was in a support group with her 19 year old daughter. When her daughter started talking about her last suicide attempt I looked at her mom’s face. She seemed fresh-cut and I knew in listening she was at that day again. Her daughter talked quietly. In pale tones she described the day she jumped off a bridge. A new study recommends that Aspen develop a sustainable, suicide prevention program in Pitkin County and create an agency to coordinate local mental health services.

In the last year, the suicide rate has increased on CSU's campus among students, faculty and staff. With rising numbers, one would think Wednesday's Q.P.R. session teaching preventative measures for suicide would have drawn a larger crowd than one Collegian reporter, a student event facilitator and a CSU counselor.

At the beginning of this month, Lawrence University received a $300,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, dedicated to outreach programs related to stress and suicide. The money will be dispersed over three years in amounts of $100,000 each year.

This grant is for the intention to hire a part time program director for one year.
