Surf Lifesaving is a multifaceted movement that has its origins in Australia in the early 1900's. In essence, as the name suggests, the focus is on providing a beach based lifeguard service which depending on country and region, may be voluntary or "full time". The other key parts of surf lifesaving are the sports which have developed out of training programs for lifeguards. These include beach, pool and ocean based sports such as surfboat racing, "flags" and Ironman as examples.
