Svalbard Global Seed Vault - This seed bank is being built inside a mountain on Spitsbergen Island near the small village of Longyearbyen.

The bank will have dual blast-proof doors with motion sensors, two airlocks, and walls of steel-reinforced concrete one meter thick. It will contain up to three million different varieties of seeds from around the world, "so that crop diversity can be conserved for the future"

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a non-profit effort.

This story has intrigued me since I first heard of it a few years ago. I did some checking. The doomsday vault seems to be open for business. More than 320,000 seed species from all over the world are now safely stored in the Norwegian permafrost at The Svalbard Global Seed Vault . The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change. UN chief Ban Ki-moon visited Wednesday a vault carved into the Arctic permafrost, filled with samples of the world's most important seeds in case food crops are wiped out by a catastrophe.
