Swine Flu Precautions (H1N1 Precuations): 6 Things That Everyone Must Know

With flu season among us, it is critical to protect yourself from the swine flu and the other illnesses that threaten us today. 1. Wash your hands before eating and after school.
FACT: Absolutely, true; however, how you wash your hands is equally as important as washing your hands. You must wash your hands with warm soapy water for approximately 30 seconds. For children, recommend they sing Happy Birthday or the ABC.
2. When washing their hands it is necessary to use antibacterial soap.
MYTH: You do not need antibacterial soap. In fact, this can be more harmful than beneficial. With our society using antibacterial soap all the time, it is killing not only the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria. Furthermore, it is causing the bad bacteria to become stronger and more resistant to our typical antibiotics. This is causing problems for our society because the antibiotics are not working as well on these new strands of bacteria.
3. Swine flu comes from animals, especially pigs.
MYTH: Absolutely not. The swine flu's name has even been changed so people no longer associate it with pigs.
4. When sneezing or coughing, covering your mouth with your hand or elbow is the BEST choice.
MYTH: Covering your mouth with a tissue (or disposable cloth) is the prime choice because then the germs aren't exposed to a location that they can spread to even more people. Even the elbow is touched by others.
5. Eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep is important
FACT: Definitely true. When your body has the right nutrition and the proper amount of sleep, you are able to resist more illnesses than if you eat poorly or are unrested. This is a simple concept, yet many of us neglect to do these two things. For example, if you mistreated your car - fed it contaminated gas/oil or chose not to give it any gas/oil and ran it forever without giving it any time to rest, it naturally would not perform to its ultimate capacity. It would probably overheat, break down or burn up the engine. Well, your body is the same way.
