The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across the Sydney Harbour (duh!). It connects the Sydney central business district and the North Shore. You can not only walk or cross the bridge by car or train, but also strap yourself in and climb the bridge. This is one of the few bridges in the world that allows visitors to climb it.

Thousands sat down to breakfast on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday after the iconic structure was closed to traffic and carpeted with grass for the first time for a giant picnic. About 6,000 early risers were on the steel bridge from 6:30 am to take part in the two-hour event designed to showcase Sydney's best food and outdoor lifestyle. As accordion players and trumpeters provided the background music, those who had won tickets to the picnic in a random lottery munched on fruit, pastries, muesli, yoghurt, and the staple Australian breakfast spread Vegemite. "It's amazing to see the bridge in this perspective," said ... Read Full Story

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Sydney's most famous landmarks. Completed in 1932, the construction of the bridge was an economic feat as well as an engineering triumph. Prior to the bridge being built, the only links between the city centre in the south and the residential north were by ferry or by a 20 kilometre (12 mile) road route that involved five bridge crossings. The Sydney Harbour Bridge , which is known locally as the "Coat Hanger", took eight years to build, including the railway line. The bridge was manufactured in sections on a site that is now occupied by Luna Park ... Read Full Story

Here’s one for our Sydney readers looking for a Sunday morning activity. The Mercedes-Benz Club of NSW will be staging a convoy of Benzes from all eras, with as many as 150 cars crossing Sydney Harbour Bridge tomorrow. Apparently there’ll even be a 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ in attendance. The original Gullwing is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, surely this is enough cause to check out the day if you can. You’ll need to be up bright and early, though, as the club plans to leave their Hickson Road departure point by 8am. Full details below. (more…) Read Full Story
“Please remove all jewelry, loose articles of clothing, and accessories. Please make sure there is nothing in your pockets. No cameras will be allowed. You must wear closed toed shoes. Put on your jumper, fasten your safety harness, and sign this form stating that if you fall into the harbour, we basically don’t care.” I was about to experience one of the “must do's” in Sydney, Australia — the Bridge Climb.

Sydney is a great city — clean and friendly, shiny and new. The harbour is stunning with the majestic Harbour Bridge on one side and one of the most recognizable images of the modern world, the Sydney Opera House, on the other. But besides the funny accent, insane obsession with Aussie Rules Football (footie), and cars driving on the ‘wrong’ (sorry mates, left) side of the road, Sydney can easily feel to Americans like ‘any big city, USA...

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia. The bridge is locally nicknamed The Coathanger[1] because of its arch-based design, although this usage is less prevalent than it once was.

The bridge was designed and built by Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough, Teesside and was the city's tallest structure until 1967.[citation needed] According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's widest long-span bridge[2] and its tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres (429.6 ft) from top to water level.[citation needed] It is also the fourth-longest spanning-arch bridge in the world.
