The modern state of Syria attained independence from the French mandate of Syria in 1936, but can trace its historical roots to the fourth millenium BC; its capital city, Damascus, was the seat of the Umayyad Empire and a provincial capital of the Mameluke Empire.
A little story that slipped through the net in many papers is the report that for the first time in five years a senior Syrian diplomat is visiting Washington, DC for talks with the Obama Administration. Syria has a reasonable relationship with Iran, both have been pariah states to the US for yeas, and so have banded together for support. A senior Russian official confirms inking a contract for supplying Syria with the advanced MiG-31 fighter jets but adds that the deal has not yet been sealed.
“A few years ago, two contracts were signed, one for (supplying Syria with) MiG-29s and one for MiG-31s,” the daily Kommersant quoted Alexei Fyodorov, the head of Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation, as saying on Thursday.

The Russian daily newspaper Kommersant has reported that Russia is expected to provide Syria with powerful MiG fighter jets but has not yet begun delivering the planes. Syria on Sunday denied reports that Russia had decided to call off the sale to Damascus of eight MiG-31 planes in the wake of pressure from Israel.
