One of the worst things about suffering from a disease like lupus is that a person feels very alone. Despite the fact that nearly a million and a half others have this disease it is not a glamorous disease and does not get the media play that comes from having celebrities interested in it. There is no Michael J. Fox to speak for it as he does for Parkinson's disease. There is no Jerry Lewis to run telethons like he has for decades for muscular dystrophy. Yet if we take look around there are many celebrities, actors, singers, athletes, models and authors who have ... Read Full Story

One of the drugs that are used to treat lupus is the same drug used to treat those with malaria. This medication has a long history. It can be traced back to the early 1800s when Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou, two young French pharmacists, were able to extract a yellow sticky substance from the bark of the Peruvian cinchona tree. This substance was like gum, and surprisingly would not dissolve in alcohol or be dissolved by acid. They called it quinine. It proved to have a remarkable ability to be affective in the treatment of malaria. Anti-malaria medications were put to good ... Read Full Story
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a more than twofold increased risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study. Lupus is a chronic "autoimmune" disease in which the immune system confuses its own healthy tissues with foreign tissues and sometimes attacks both. The condition can manifest as a skin rash or arthritis and may lead to damage to the kidneys, heart, lungs and brain to varying degrees. The disorder disproportionately affects women. "Despite improved life expectancy in the past few decades," increased heart-related illness and death among people with lupus has been documented in several studies, Dr. ... Read Full Story

IntroductionSerum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) seldom reflect disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We have previously shown that autoantibodies against neo-epitopes of CRP often occur in SLE, but that this does not explain the modest CRP response seen in flares. However, we have repeatedly found that anti-CRP levels parallel lupus disease activity, with highest levels in patients with renal involvement; thus, we aimed...

When you think about arthritis, you likely think "joint disease." But there are certain types of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, that have "extraarticular manifestations" -- meaning, the disease affects areas of the body outside of the joints. When this occurs, especially in multiple organ systems in the body, that form of arthritis is referred to as a systemic disease. There are over 100 types of arthritis. Learning about the...

IntroductionCardiovascular disease is a major cause of premature mortality among SLE patients. Many studies have measured and evaluated risk factors for premature subclinical atherosclerosis, but few studies are prospective and few have evaluated risk factors for hard endpoints, i.e. clinically important cardiovascular events (CVE). We investigated the impact of traditional and lupus associated risk factors for the first ever CVE in a...
