Now In Charleston Well I am now in Charleston. Kind of beat but hustling and ready to see some sights. Earlier today my host steered me to Sullivan’s Island. There he advised I would be able to view one of the most historical sites in the Southeast. Not only did the fortifications serve the colonists admirably during the colonists during the War for Independence, upgraded facilities allowed the Island to be used during the Civil War as a defense and offensive battlement by both Union and Confederate forces. It was from here that Union forces retreated to Sumter Island. After their retreat Confederate forces ... Read Full Story

Every year during the month of February America celebrates the memory and accomplishments of African slaves and their scions who, for centuries, endured the barbarism of American slavery. Amongst our most well-known African heroes and heroines are the likes of Frederick Douglass , Sojourner Truth , George Washington Carver , and Ida B. Wells Barnet . Well today just got tired onf being indoors and working. Decided to visit some friends. Took a walk down one the established "nature trails" in their subdivision. At first I thought it was a joke, but no kidding there is a nature trail. No walk through the swamps or woods to savor the beauty of nature's creation, but a real live man made nature trail. Shouldn't be surprised, before the colonials got here the Native Americans had their trails and established paths. Though they served more as byways and trade routes somewhere. I guess that when it all boils down the underlying purpose of ... Read Full Story

Rice Cultivation in Colonial South Carolina. Rice cultivation in South Carolina really had its roots in the 1690s, about 20 years after the colony’s founding. By 1695 the first exports are recorded: onand a half barrels containing less than 500 hundred pounds. A very small amount. Considering this it’s a wonder that rice was even considered to be a viable crop let alone an exportable commodity. But the settlers were pinned against the wall, considering efforts in other industries came up croppers. First wars with the Yamasee Indians along the coastline decimated ranching and the deerskin trade. The trade based on salt beef and ... Read Full Story

The Haitians at the Battle for Savannah People I have to tell you that I am convinced that I have been suffering from what is commonly referred to as “senior moments” for quite some time. The situation that brought this to mind occurred the other day when I visited Savannah for the sole purpose of meeting my friend and business partner on River Street to discuss some problems we’ve been having. On my way to the meeting I parked as usual at the Savannah Visitor’s Center. The parking is always cheap, no hassle and within walking distance of River Street. There have been occasions ...
