There's A Chance Meghan Markle (That's Duchess To You) Will Appear In 'Suits' Season 9
'Suits' creator Aaron Korsh isn't ruling out the possibility of the Duchess of Sussex making a cameo in the final season.
Legal drama Suits is leaving the air soon. It was recently renewed for a ninth season, and per the Hollywood Reporter, it will be the show's last. The culminating season will have a 10-episode run set to air later this year. Now, we know what you're thinking. Will Patrick J. Adams, who played Mike Ross, make a comeback? How about Meghan Markle, who already bid goodbye to Hollywood when she wed Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex?
According to series creator Aaron Korsh, it's too early to tell. Suits writers are still in the early stages of ironing out details and can't say for sure if Markle's character, Rachel Zane, will fit into the story.
"As of this minute I don’t know which of our old original cast will be back and which won’t because we’re so early in the season," he told Deadline. "I can tell you that those things in the papers, I have no idea what they’re talking about.
What papers, you ask? Earlier this month, rumors floated that the duchess would reprise her role in exchange for a sizable donation to the charity of her choice, courtesy of NBC. According to the stories, the network is so excited about a potential royal cameo that it's willing to fork out a two to six million dollar donation.
"I have not arranged for millions of dollars to be donated to anything on behalf of anyone so that I can tell you," Korsh continued. "But as far as the original people coming back including Jessica, we’re so early in the season that we haven’t formulated what we want to do, so we can’t reach out to people before we know what we want to do."
Before she tied the knot, Markle gave Rachel a proper farewell. Coincidentally, Rachel walked down the aisle not too long before Markle. In the two-hour Season 7 finale, Rachel and Mike accepted job offers in Seattle and decided to move up their wedding. They had a beautiful ceremony. Hugs were exchanged, tears were shed, and the couple rode off into the sunset.
Adams also left the series after Season 7, and according to Korsh, it's also up to him if Mike will appear for Suits' swan song.
"When Patrick left, we talked about the notion of him coming back. It had to be right story-wise, and he had to be in a place where he wants to do it, depending on what’s going on with him," he dished. "In the back six, it didn’t feel right for that. The final 10, you can’t contemplate it without contemplating bringing Mike back. We’re contemplating it and we’ll see where we land, and how Patrick feels."
As for the finale, Korsh said it will take place in true Suits fashion. He won't promise anything, but did guarantee it's bittersweet.
"We have over the course of the years a lot of characters that we care about and love. And yet rarely if ever have we done a full-on happy ending for all of them or a full-on sad ending for all of them, it’s just not common to do in the lexicon of Suits," he said of the show's tendency to include heartwrenching plots. "Oftentimes we give with one hand, take away with another or have a bittersweet ending. That’s just often how it goes."
