'L.A.'s Finest' Showrunner Has Leg Partially Amputated After Freak Car Stunt Accident
Executive producer Brandon Sonnier was severely injured after a stunt went out of control.
It was a car stunt gone wrong.
Last Thursday, L.A’.s Finest's executive producer and co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier, along with fellow executive producer and co-showrunner Brandon Margolis, were rushed to the hospital after a stunt accident. Deadline reports the showrunners and other producers were in the video village area of the set watching a car stunt scene. Moments later, the car crashed into a cargo crate, which then rammed into the video village.
Sonnier’s leg was pinned in the crash. Sonnier and Margolis were sent to the hospital for treatment, but Margolis was released right away. Sonnier's injuries were far more severe, and one of his legs was eventually amputated just below the knee.
Natalie Lembeck, a friend of the family, set up a Meal Train page to accept donations on behalf of Sonnier.
"Brandon was in an accident on Thursday when a stunt went wrong on the set of his TV show. His foot was badly injured and was ultimately removed on Sunday. Aside from this humongous life change, he is going to be ok," the page reads. "The extent of his injuries were so severe that amputation is what Brandon & Sarah wanted. Brandon is young and strong and has a lot of willpower - all signs point to him living a normal life with prostheses - after a long road of therapies and such, of course."
As of this writing, a total of $109,635 was donated for Sonnier's recovery — $9,000 more than the initial goal. Charter Communications, which gave a 13-episode series order for the show, donated $5,000 and Jeff Frost, president of Sony Pictures Television, donated $5,000. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced Bad Boys, the movie L.A.'s Finest is based on, donated $10,000.
According to the Meal Train page, Sonnier is now home and surrounded by family.
Meanwhile, California’s Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) opened an investigation to probe what went wrong.
Hopefully, a freak accident like this won't ever happen again. Producers, writers, actors, and other staff should always be safe from harm on-set.
L.A.'s Finest is an upcoming series starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. An offshoot from the successful Bad Boys franchise, it will follow Sydney "Syd" Burnett (Union) and her partner Nancy McKenna (Alba) as they chase criminals throughout the city of Los Angeles.
It is set to premiere on May 13, 2019, on Spectrum video.
