What a great card for the week that transitions us from March to April, when Spring comes with more certainty and clarity (in the Northern Hemisphere). The Aces of the Tarot represent new beginnings, strength, speed and energy. Each Ace depicts the essential, initial energy of its suit.
Aces are the growth process, whether that growth is physical, mental or spiritual. In many traditions, Spring is associated with the Element of Air, which is represented by the Swords in the Tarot. The Swords suit concerns the intellect, ideas, choices, and the mind. So the Ace of Swords points to new possibilities in the realms of communication, learning, and judgment.
The Ace of Swords in the Waite-Smith deck shows a hand issuing from a cloud, grasping a sword, the point of which is encircled by a crown. There are many interpretations of this crown - it may represent the material world, or authority, perhaps even the Crown chakra, for the intellect is the most common way by which we move beyond our own immediate experience of ourselves.
The Ace of Swords is a particularly decisive card, denoting clearness of vision and freedom from confusion. It enables personal understanding and the ability to understand others. This week’s card may herald new and aggressive beginnings...victory, success, triumph and the conquering of enemies and obstacles. It may also indicate a complete change of mind and/or lifestyle.
The Witch's Pyramid, sometimes called the Hermetic Quaternary, entreats us, "To Know. To Will. To Dare. To Keep Silent." These four commands are the traditional basis for weaving magic in the world. The Ace of Swords is powerful representative of the first of these, as we initiate spellwork, set goals, and begin projects of all sorts. First, we must have clarity regarding our intention before we act on behalf of our desires.
This week, look for a turning point or breakthrough that brings new clarity and wisdom. This would be an excellent time to sign up for a course of study, or gather important information about a new project or path for yourself. Welcome new ideas, points of view, and opportunities for communication.
Although the Swords often indicate conflict, don’t shy away from new thoughts, alternative perspectives, or previously unseen parts of your own authentic truth.
