Swiss ace Fabian Cancellara claimed his third career gold in the men's time trial after crushing his rivals at the world road race championships on Thursday. Gustav Larsson of Sweden finished a distant second to take the silver medal while Germany's Tony Martin finished third for the bronze. Cancellara, who won the world title in both 2006 and 2007, averaged a speed of just over 51km/h for the 49.8km course which he completed in 57min 55sec. Tour de France contenders Saxo Bank suffered a blow Tuesday when road captain Kurt-Asle Arvesen was forced out of the race after suffering a broken collarbone in a heavy crash during the 10th stage. The 34-year-old Norwegian champion, who won the 11th stage on last year's Tour, fell after 87km trying to avoid a spectator who had fallen into the road. Saxo Bank leader Andy Schleck insisted no one deserves winning Thursday's 12th stage of the Tour de France more than team-mate Nicki Soerensen after years of helping the Luxemburger. MENDRISIO, Switzerland (Reuters) - Olympic champion Fabian Cancellera of Switzerland destroyed the field to win the time trial at the road world cycling championships for the third time on Thursday. The Swiss rider finished the 49.8-kilometre course in 57 minutes 55 seconds, nearly one-and-a-half minutes ahead of his nearest rival Gustav Larsson of Sweden.
