A conversation with Mr. Bott

Ed Bott has a ton of expertise when it comes to talking about Media Center and Windows in general.  So when an opportunity comes to have a listen to his insight, you take it.  Yesterday I had the opportunity to join the live chat with Ian Dixon from The Digital Lifestyle and I must say that while not all of my questions were answered, there was some good information and I wanted to share it here. The biggest topic was of course the Windows TV Pack 2008 or "Fiji" as it used to be known.  I... Read Full Story

Why do we have to hate?

I came across an article this morning on how Microsoft is starting an ad campaign for Vista with comedian Jerry Seinfeld to hit back at Apple for their PC vs. Mac ads.  Ok, MS needs to advertise Vista and Seinfeld’s HP commercial isn’t too bad, so this could be a good match… But, Seinfeld being funny, or HP making nice commercials isn’t really the issue here.  What I’m wondering is why I keep getting Google alerts telling me that everyone on the planet (apparently) is rolling their PC... You’ll Thank Me One Day*

Baby’s first steps. Graduations. Birthday parties. Wedding ceremonies. Today’s topic came from a recent conversation with a friend of mine– “That’s what life is; an accumulation of memories”–   and it got me onto to thinking about Deep Things.. and yes, I took a little stroll down my own Memory Lane… But this is, after all, a tech site, and I am a World Renown Tech Journalist, and so I will not get all nostalgic on you, nor ’share’ some of my favorite recollections. No, I won’t. But I will... Read Full Story

It’s all about control…

While a mouse and keyboard are good for controlling media center if you’re sitting at a desk, it gets a little more difficult from 10 or 12 feet away.  Today I decided to show you some options for controlling your Vista Media Center as well as any extenders you might be running. First up is the media center machine itself.  Now, if you’ve installed any sort of decent TV tuner then you should already have a remote.  Most come packaged with them so at least to get started, you’ll be all set... Extenders

You can run your VMC in one room and feel pretty good about yourself. You have all of your media available to you in one central location, it’s easy to use, and even your wife likes it. But I have to say, the best feature of a Media Center setup is extending it beyond one room and sharing your media through out your house and even over the internet. Today I’ll be covering the various ways to extend your VMC experience to the rest of the house. None of them are perfect solutions but they... Read Full Story
