Telemarking... I think I can...

My husband is a huge telemark skiier. Wait, that sounds bad - see him above - he isn't HUGE, he is big into telemark skiing. I can ski, you know, regular ski. Like, I don't fall off the chairlift or anything. So I threw it out there that maybe I could learn how to telemark. Our friend Kellie is also telemarking and I thought - well, if Mike can't teach me then maybe Kellie can help me learn. And for some reason, learning to telemark ski really didn't scare me at all. We went to Pine Mountain... Read Full Story

La Guêpe Ride

La Guêpe Ride is an annual event held in La Clusaz which sounds a lot like Gay Pride to French people. Apparently, this is another one of their plays on words, but nobody really understands why, since the event is a telemark ski weekend! Festivities include a parade of telemarkers bombing it down the slopes of l’Etale, at least one person dressed as a wasp (”gûepe” is French for “wasp”), booze, freebies, and the chance to try telemarking with a ski instructor for free, along with all the... PW07

From:  thegistofit.net
Warning: Long review. For a quick summary, go to the bottom of the review and check out “conclusion”. Check out the trailer and buy the video here . As this is my first post in an ongoing series of ski movie reviews. The format is still a work in progress, so please let me know what you think. Following the success of their first two movies (PW05 and PW06) anticipation was ripe for one of the best telemark ski movie series. Although telemark skiing is not nearly as popular as alpine... Winter Telemark Skiing Photos: A Few To Keep the Winter Stoke Going

Well, I was really hoping to get another telemark video posted this week, but we decided to give it one more session in the editing room. It should be done and posted in two weeks - we are off to telemark some backcountry spots in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and do some long trail running and secret bouldering in Northern New Mexico . However, to keep the stoke of the telemark season going just a little longer, here are a few photos of winter fun. Sure wish it would dump like it was... Read Full Story

Winter Playground In France

The Resort Val D'Isère is a long thin resort which combined with Tignes forms part of the vast Espace Killy, ranked amongst the top 5 luxury ski holidays in Europe. The central area is made up of Val Village, where everyone gathers at night for very lively après-ski, and the satellite mini-resorts of La Daille and Le Fornet are all linked by a free bus service. La Daille, the first village you will encounter upon leaving the last tunnel is close to some great slopes whilst Le Fornet sits at... Read Full Story

Telemark Dreams

On Sunday afternoon, as I picked a wide line through the woods between the Goat trail and the Nosedive trail on Mt. Mansfield, I marveled at the amount of woods available for skiing in Stowe. I also marveled at the amount of snow under my boards. It was the second day of March, and we'd just had the snowiest February ever. Well, maybe we didn't have the snowiest February ever, but Burlington did. Don't get me wrong; we had a bunch of snow last month, and the snow at the stake at the top of Mt... Read Full Story

Stowe Derby

"Crazy....but a helluva lot of fun" were the words used by my husband to describe his first experience at the Stowe Derby. Dubbed one of the oldest and most unique ski races in North America, it was voted the top sports event in the state by readers of Vermont Sports Magazine. This years event is scheduled to take place on February 24, 2008. And what an event it will be! Hundreds of competitors will participate racing from the top of Mt. Mansfield(Stowe Mountain) to the finish line in the... Read Full Story

Mid-Winter Laps: Telemark Skiing Switch, Jumps, and Backcountry Video

Well, today we hit the high 80s mark on the thermometer. That means the spring snowpack is going to melt out really fast again this spring. Seems to be happening more and more: we get a good snow pack built up in March and April to only have it melt out by the end of May. Growing up I remember when it would last well into June and sometimes even into July. No worries, just means a longer season running peaks... However, in honor (or remembrance) of this past winter, we put together another... Read Full Story

Avalanche Control

From:  gravityrides.com
This is a small video I took while waiting for the Peak Chair to open last Saturday. There was 22cm of fresh snow overnight, and Patrol was being very cautious and bombed just about everything. I counted at least 5 bombs on the ridge above Excitation. This was the last one to go off. Check it out. QT_WriteOBJECT("/images/blog/avalanche_control.mov" [...] Read Full Story
