The Bahá’í Faith is a world religion based on the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. He taught that there is only one God and one human family, and that the great religions of the world represent successive stages in the spiritual evolution of human society. “The peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God,” Baha'u'llah states. His teachings offer spiritual understanding for a world seeking direction and hope, as well as guidance for personal and social conduct.

The more than five million Bahá’ís around the world are learning how to translate these teachings into new patterns of individual and community life. Though they come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they are united by their belief in the essential spiritual nature of our existence and by their desire for a just and peaceful future for all of humanity.

Immediately following a report in today's Iranian Resalat newspaper that "the seven detained Baha'i believers have confessed to setting up an illegal organization in Iran that took orders from Israel and others to undermine the Islamic system," the Baha'i International Community responded: "we deny in the strongest possible terms the suggestion that Baha'is in Iran have engaged in any subversive activity," said Bani Dugal, principal representative of the Baha'i International Community to the United Nations. "The Baha'i community is not involved in political affairs. Their only 'crime' is the practice of their religion." "The seriousness of the allegations makes us fear for the lives ... Read Full Story

From Machines Like Us : “The world faces a compounding series of crises driven by human activity, which existing governments and institutions are increasingly powerless to cope with, a group of eminent environmental scientists and economists has warned.” And, quoting the scientists they cite in the article, they add: “The major powers must be willing to enforce an agreement – but legitimacy will depend on acceptance by numerous and diverse countries, and non-governmental actors such as civil society and business…To address common threats and harness common opportunities, we need greater interaction amongst existing institutions, and new institutions, to help construct and maintain a global-scale ... UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations General Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution expressing “deep concern” about “ongoing systematic violations of human rights” in Iran. Adopted by a final vote of 73 to 53, with 55 abstentions, the resolution took note of repression and persecution aimed by the Iranian government at groups ranging from women and women’s rights defenders to the news media and labor groups, as well as various ethnic and religious minorities, including Baha’is. “We are happy that the General Assembly, the most globally representative body of United Nations, has seen fit once again this year to call attention to the dire situation ... Table of contents for A New Generation A New Generation, pt. 1 A New Generation, pt. II Some readers might recall that last summer, I was working on a project with my daughter and some of her friends where we explored the history of racism. It got complicated and petered out, but it wasn’t fruitless. In fact, I took some of the ideas that I used in that project and incorporated them into a children’s class I taught this weekend at a Baha’i conference. It was an experience that gives me a lot of hope for the future. We started out by talking about ... Read Full Story

GENEVA, December 23, 2008 (BWNS)- The Baha’i International Community today expressed grave concern over the closing by the Iranian government of Shirin Ebadi’s Defenders of Human Rights Center in Tehran and called for its reopening. “The closing of Mrs. Ebadi’s office is a blow to human rights for the whole of Iran,” said Diane Ala’i, a representative of the Baha’i International Community to the United Nations in Geneva. “The spokesperson of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that the reason behind the closure was that the Center has no license. But it would be a simple matter to give them one. Otherwise, the ... Read Full Story

As the 21 st century opens, the Baha'i religion has emerged in all parts of the globe as an independent world faith, with its own scriptures, laws, and community of believers who have a distinctive pattern of worship and community life.   Its character as an independent religion has been recognized by the highest civil and religious authorities of many nations in both the East and West.   Academics and scholars have confirmed this finding from the perspectives of history, sociology and the comparative study of religions.   Civil authorities in more than 180 countries have recognized the religious character of Baha'i institutions and ... One of our readers commented on liking recent posts on human rights and the Iranian Bahá’ís. Because of the truth that, if one person says something, there are a number of others who feel the same way but haven’t mentioned it, I thought I’d do a follow-up post to the one I did on the seven incarcerated Irainians. The following story is reprinted from the site of the Bahá’í International Community : The seven Baha’is who have been arrested are, seated from left, Behrouz Tavakkoli and Saeid Rezaie, and, standing, Fariba Kamalabadi, Vahid Tizfahm, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naeimi, and Mahvash Sabet. All are from ... Read Full Story
