The Fifth Friday in Lent While experts debate the value of carbon offsets: visit Care2 to offset 1 lb. of carbon for free each day. At least it plants a tree funds a wind farm! I’ve blogged before about the mildly controversial practice of carbon offsets — the act of planting a tree or otherwise undertaking a carbon-reducing activity to reduce one’s carbon footprint. (Controversial because folks don’t agree on offsets’ effectiveness.) They’re especially popular to compensate for the carbon produced by air travel, which I’ll be writing about tomorrow. Since we’re in the DIY portion of the carbon fast and I have to ... Read Full Story

DAY 42 – TUESDAY 7 APRIL “Calculate your carbon footprint today at www.tearfund.org/mgi and find out what more you can do about climate change. Order Tearfund’s green guide ‘For TomorrowToo’ at www.tearfund.org/climate for ideas on cutting emissions.” I wanted to find a carbon footprint calculator that didn’t immediately ask one to buy an offset. The one below seems to do the trick. If and when you are ready to offset, I’m a fan of Carbonfund.org , which is a nonprofit (offsets are tax deductible) and has its own calculators, too. TerraPass is another good choice, although they’re a for-profit and contributions aren’t deductible. Get ... Read Full Story

I know I have touched on Green Ideas for the holidays before but it can never be stressed enough. We need to save our Earth everyday, year around. So, here are a few more ideas that may help you do so.  Celebrate the holidays being Green: Save energy by using LED lights. If we all switched we would save a lot of electricity. There are many different lighting options out now and some are solar powered. Cut up your old cards and use them for decoupage projects, gift tags or kids crafts. Give an herb garden kit to a favorite gardener Gift and Solio ... Read Full Story

The holidays are right around the corner so it is time to start thinking about how you are going to wrap those gifts while still staying green.  In my family, we love to wrap presents for family and friends in the artwork the kids made.  If you have kids, you know how quickly the drawings and painting can add up.  This is a great way to recycle their artwork while showing it off as a unique giftwrap.  So, what do you do?  I would love to hear how you wrap your gifts!  Below is the top 10 green gift wrap ideas from Gaiam, enjoy! ... It's Earth Day! And I have to admit, I'm a bit of a greenie...not scary - chain myself to trees green...but I do recycle, compost, turn off lights, etc. It's amazing how many hobbies and past times are now going green. So, let's talk about green photography. In essence a green photographer..."can be defined as one who uses renewable resources (environmentally sustainable) and is accountable for the human resource aspect of their activities (socially responsible)." How do you "go green" as a photographer? Apparently there are several things you can do/steps you can take...some more obvious than others. Shocker! Digital photography is more green ... Christmas is a time to honor traditions, so I am going to blow the digital dust off my Christmas science column and try to answer a question suitable to the just-completed climate change talks in Copenhagen: What is Santa Claus’ carbon footprint? In past Christmas columns, I have calculated that Santa travels an average of 5.14 million mph and carries 250,000 tons of presents, spending one-five thousandths of a second at each home. How much...
