Angry soccer fans rampaged through a posh diplomatic neighborhood in Cairo over the weekend, smashing shop windows and shouting obscenities in a frenzy fed by venomous headlines that portrayed Algerians as barbaric terrorists with a history of violence. Egyptians were infuriated by media reports alleging their fans were brutalized by their Algerian rivals after Algeria won a playoff match Wednesday in Khartoum, Sudan, to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Egypt's government — often bemoaned by its people as repressive and indifferent to their suffering under searing poverty — appears to have seized on the furor to demonstrate some unity with its citizens. President Hosni Mubarak vowed on Saturday that Egypt will be firm in dealing with attacks on its nationals, amid hot tempers and a diplomatic spat with Algeria over a World Cup football showdown. "Egypt will not be lax with those who harm the dignity of its sons," he told cheering MPs in parliament. "The welfare of our citizens abroad is the responsibility of the country. We look after their rights and reject violations and transgressions against them," he said in his first apparent reference to the diplomatic row with Algiers. Gamal Mubarak, younger son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, cast himself as a defender of the poor on Sunday in a speech seen by many as an attempt to hone his prospects of succeeding his father. The 45-year-old former investment banker heads the powerful policy committee in the ruling National Democratic Party and is widely tipped as the next president, although he has never admitted having presidential aspirations. Addressing the party convention a day after his father pledged a "clean and free" presidential election in 2011, Mubarak held forth for more than an hour on the NDP's aims in what resembled a stump speech. ... UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and outgoing head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, said in a television interview he would not rule out running for the presidency of his native Egypt. ElBaradei said one should "never say never" but made clear there would have to be "built-in guarantees" that the election, scheduled for 2011, would be run properly before he would agree to run. "I will only consider it if there is a free and fair election and that is a question mark still in Egypt," ElBaradei said in an interview with CNN broadcast on Thursday. The 67-year-old ... Egypt has rejected Monday for the fourth time the application for legal status of a political party seeking to promote a moderate version of Islam. Al-Wasat Al-Jadid (the New Center) was founded in 1996 by activists who split off from the conservative Muslim Brotherhood and sought to create a political movement promoting a tolerant version of Islam with liberal tendencies. The government says the proposed party's program doesn't comply with Egyptian laws, which ban parties based on religious affiliation. "Al-Wasat Al-Jadid's project is an attempt to put hope and positivity into the children of this nation, and rejecting this party is an attempt to ... Read Full Story
