Egypt vows to be firm after World Cup defeat

President Hosni Mubarak vowed on Saturday that Egypt will be firm in dealing with attacks on its nationals, amid hot tempers and a diplomatic spat with Algeria over a World Cup football showdown. "Egypt will not be lax with those who harm the dignity of its sons," he told cheering MPs in parliament. "The welfare of our citizens abroad is the responsibility of the country. Gamal Mubarak, younger son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, cast himself as a defender of the poor on Sunday in a speech seen by many as an attempt to hone his prospects of succeeding his father. ElBaradei won't rule out run for Egypt presidency

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and outgoing head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, said in a television interview he would not rule out running for the presidency of his native Egypt. ElBaradei said one should "never say never" but made clear there would have to be "built-in guarantees" that the election, scheduled for 2011, would be run properly before he would agree to run. Egypt rejects request for moderate Islamic party

Egypt has rejected Monday for the fourth time the application for legal status of a political party seeking to promote a moderate version of Islam. Al-Wasat Al-Jadid (the New Center) was founded in 1996 by activists who split off from the conservative Muslim Brotherhood and sought to create a political movement promoting a tolerant version of Islam with liberal tendencies.
