A Review of the RSC’s New Production of As You Like It – RST, Stratford-upon-Avon

By Steve Newman on  From sjnewman.wordpress.com
If RSC productions were to be likened to Royal Navy vessels one or two recent ones might easily have come under the category of Henry VIII’s doomed Mary Rose. Thankfully Maria Aberg’s new production of As You Like It  is a sleek HMS Dreadnought of a show: beautifully designed, thrilling, and, when required, highly dangerous. It’s also very funny, which the 1904 designer label battleship never was. Every element of this production is an extremely well balanced affair, with the actors...Read Full Story

Based on a true story it was a rather comforting yarn about a queen who, to me, had always looked rather sad. The piece...Read Full Story

Haydn's The Creation - Stratford-upon-Avon Choral Society

By Steve Newman on  From stevenewmansclassicalgroove.blogspot.com

No art or emotion. By contrast, on Saturday at Holy Trinity Church, the Stratford-upon-Avon Choral Society gave a beautiful performance of Haydn's The Creation. It was a heartfelt interpretation (using texts from Genesis and  Milton's Paradise Lost) of Haydn’s masterpiece.Written at the end of the 18th century this oratorio was an...Read Full Story
