Stem cell research is a hotly contested political issue that goes well beyond the science and into the cultural fabric of the United States.

Is this a moral issue, and if so, how do you weight the pros and cons on both sides of the stem cell debate? How will the 2008 presidential candidates handle this issue in upcoming debates? Will the stem cell debate play a key role in elections going forward?

Human embryonic stem cells are able to change into any of the 200 cell types in the human body French researchers say they have found a way of using human embryonic stem cells to create new skin which could help serious burns victims. They say the stem cells grew into fully formed human skin 12 weeks after being grafted on to mice. The researchers, writing in the Lancet journal, say the skin could solve the problems of rejection that burns patients currently face. One stem cell expert said they had made an important advance. Burns techniques For more than 20 years, patients with serious ... Read Full Story

With the stroke of pen, on March 9th, 2009 , the United States entered the race that could see it become a world leader in embryonic stem cell research, passing Canada by leaps and bounds. On that day, US President Barack Obama reversed the federal opposition to Stem Cell research, and overturned an order imposed by former President Bush that both financially and legally limited the science.  Now the best and brightest Canadian minds will probably migrate south, following the money, but hopefully the medical breakthroughs that result will benefit all mankind. Stem Cells and Disease Stem cells are thought by most scientists and ... Read Full Story

In a find that could change the way lung diseases are being treated at this point, experts have managed to obtain fully functional lung cells from human embryonic stem cells for the first time ever. The Belgian science team that has been behind the new accomplishment was able to make them differentiate in a very convenient environment, a basic air-liquid interface. Chronic pulmonary diseases and inherited genetic conditions, including cystic fibrosis, could become a thing of the past from now on, as the new method will also make it a lot easier for lung transplants to be conducted, PhysOrg reports. “Efforts will be made ... It seems that the information continues to mount that adult stem cells (induced pluripotent stem cells, iPS) are a far better option than embryonic stem cells. Forbes.com released a story explaining that adult stem cells avoid many of the problems scientists have faced with embryonic stem cells. To read the full story, click here. Now Forbes has joined the growing tide of mainstream media reporting that adult stem cells are the future in stem cell research. I posted a few weeks back about Dr. Oz on the Oprah Winfrey show. He and Michael J. Fox were guests on Oprah’s show and it was on ... Read Full Story

The results are in for the Quest December poll on embryonic stem cell research. 80% of those who responded to the Quest poll are in favor of embryonic stem cell research, with only 10% saying they opposed it and 10% undecided. Compare that to a national scientific research survey conducted by Charlton Research Company for Research!America in 2006 and the results are less skewed but similar. According to that survey, 60% of Americans strongly or somewhat favor embryonic stem cell research, while only 21% strongly oppose it. The poll question and results, here at Quest, were: Are You in Favor of EMBRYONIC Stem Cell ... Read Full Story
The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Obama administration's new rules on federal funding for stem cell research, which reversed the Bush policy of prohibiting such funding in most cases. And I'm not usually a big fan of dismissing cases based on standing, but in this case there was just no legal basis for the challenge at all. The plaintiffs in the case were the Christian Medical...

The President has lifted the Bush ban on stem cell research and promised federal funding. Scientists are now predicting great advances in the treatment of such things as diabetes, HIV, spinal injuries, and many other areas of human suffering in the next few years. Apparently the researchers have been chafing at the bit and are all ready to go with plans for research in many areas. The intention is to use unwanted embryo from IVF programs...
