Stem cell research is a hotly contested political issue that goes well beyond the science and into the cultural fabric of the United States.
Is this a moral issue, and if so, how do you weight the pros and cons on both sides of the stem cell debate? How will the 2008 presidential candidates handle this issue in upcoming debates? Will the stem cell debate play a key role in elections going forward?

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Obama administration's new rules on federal funding for stem cell research, which reversed the Bush policy of prohibiting such funding in most cases. And I'm not usually a big fan of dismissing cases based on standing, but in this case there was just no legal basis for the challenge at all.

The President has lifted the Bush ban on stem cell research and promised federal funding.
Scientists are now predicting great advances in the treatment of such things as diabetes, HIV, spinal injuries, and many other areas of human suffering in the next few years. Apparently the researchers have been chafing at the bit and are all ready to go with plans for research in many areas.
The intention is to use unwanted embryo from IVF programs...
