With Halloween just around the corner, 'tis the time of year to celebrate the things that go bump in the night. And, in case you haven't noticed, we're in the midst of a golden age for scary movies. The horror genre has never been stronger, but the scares come from many genres these days. There are so many movies made now that it's hard to keep up, even with the best flicks.

We've emerged from the torture porn 2000s with clear eyes. Today's directors are nostalgia freaks who love John Carpenter's old soundtracks and throwback scares. Not everyone is interested in homage, but we're seeing more and more of it in film today and especially in horror and suspense. Not only does the notion run a current through horror spacetime, it leads younger fans to seek out those older movies that inspired the new. It also encourages talented directors to try their hand at scaring people.

Honestly, though, most people aren't critics. Visual storytelling usually comes across, but it's not a hugely emotional thing. Being scared is, though. No matter how you watch movies, you can't deny the primal instinct within us. Fear is what keeps us alive. And to feel fear is to feel alive. That's why we love scary movies.

These are the ten films that have frightened me most since 2010. I hope they scare the shit out of you too. Happy Halloween!
