Long before David Chase felt it necessary to leave the country when the series finale for The Sopranos aired, there was Patrick McGoohan and his series the The Prisoner (1967-1968). The series finale ("Fall Out") so infuriated and puzzled viewers, McGoohan had to retreat to the mountains of Wales to get peace. McGoohan's uncompromising series was willfully weird and vague to the very end, but like The Sopranos, there was closure for those who...
This short video of James Gandolfini menacing a Guest of a Guest photographer who was videotaping him in the West Village is funny, but also kind of sad, for a couple reasons. First, Gandolfini's worked hard to find roles that take his career past the Tony Soprano archetype, and now here he is acting just like Tony about to thrash the Bada Bing bartender for not being sufficiently anxious about Al Qaeda.
The other sort of sad part is that...

The Rev. Al Sharpton bumped into James Gandolfini in the elevator on his way to Def Jam/Island mogul L.A. Reid’s apartment the other night, and the two — who had never met before — had a quick chat.
The next day, when Sharpton arrived at his Harlem office, a three-pound salami was waiting with a [...]
Eglise Gutiérrez as a sickly Violetta, confronting the mirror in La Traviata's final moments. Seattle Opera photo by Rosarii Lynch. Speight Jenkins steps out from the wings just before the opening curtain on La Traviata to announce that the star of the show, soprano Eglise Gutiérrez, is suffering from a cold...but will perform regardless. Knowing murmurs (and not a few coughs) rustle through the audience: in the opera, the soprano's...

CAMBRIDGE - There are singers who do little with a lot. Joan Sutherland comes to mind. There are those who do a great deal with less. The queen of these is surely Dame Emma Kirkby, the English early-music specialist who made a rare appearance Friday night to an overflow crowd at First Church in Cambridge, Congregational, under the auspices of ...
There was nothing pretty about Florence Foster Jenkins' singing. But there might be something beautiful about it. Foster Jenkins is one of the two characters in Madison Theatre Guild's Souvenir, which opened Oct. 14 at the Bartell Theatre. She's odd, compelling -- and utterly real.
NEW YORK - Soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Roberto Alagna are ending their marriage on a low note. Gheorghiu says she has started divorce proceedings against Alagna, whom she married on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in April 1996 - with then New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani presiding.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…I wouldn’t wish celebrity fame on my worst enemy. It has to be hard being followed all of the time, and is only a matter of time before you would snap. Unfortunately, for a Guest of a Guest photographer, the moment Sopranos star James Gandolfini snapped happened [...]
