The National Assembly for Wales has power to make legislation in Wales. The assembly building, known as the Senedd, was opened in March 2006 by the Queen.
The Assembly was formed under the Government of Wales Act 1998, by the Labour government, following a referendum in 1997. The campaign for a 'yes' vote in the referendum was supported by the Labour Party, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and much of Welsh civic society, such as church groups and the trade union movement. The Welsch Conservative Party was the only major political party in Wales to oppose.
Yesterday we had the rogue poll cutting the Tory lead to 6%. Now, yet another poll is released which will make Conservatives sleep a little easier in their beds tonight; Tories on 39%, Labour 22% and the Lib Dems on 21%. Others on 18%. Two things worthy of note. Firstly, I have said for a quite some time that Labour and the Lib Dems are neck and neck on around 23%. An update on the forthcoming propaganda project, Carmarthenshire TV; last month Assembly member Nerys Evans asked the following question of the Minister for Finance, "Will the Minister detail (a) the amount of money the Welsh Assembly Government gave to Carmarthenshire Local Service Board as a 'development grant', (b) the rules regarding the spending of this grant, and (c) any assessment he has made of the grant being used to fund a television channel on the internet. You would have thought that the consultation on the new draft TAN 6(Welsh Assembly guidance on developments in the countryside) would be a very important matter in a largely rural and heavily forested county, where developments in the countryside, particularly residential, are controversial, but vital issues for young families and traditional rural workers, and incorporate elements of local need and affordable housing.
