What Are The Causes of Constant Ringing in Ears?

The causes of constant ringing in ears are generally associated with certain disorders in the ear. One of these is presbycusis or age-associated hearing loss, which usually starts around age 60. Ear ringing is medically termed as tinnitus, which is defined as the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head in the absence of an external source.

The most common cause of tinnitus these days, however, is found to be noise-induced cochlear damage. In fact, around 90% of the cases of this ringing in the ears is caused by this particular condition. Listening to MP3 players, which are set to high volume, for many hours is one of the leading causes of cochlear damage. Another cause is going to concerts without wearing any ear protection devices and staying near the speakers. After the concert, you may hear a ringing noise that immediately goes away. However, if it happens again and again, this temporary ear ringing may become permanent, and you would not want that to happen.

You see, hearing that annoying noise day in and day out can disrupt your daily activities and your overall health, for that matter. You may not be able to concentrate, you may get stressed and find it hard to fall asleep at night, which can further result to different unhealthy conditions. Thus, it is important that you take care of your ear health as much as you can. What you can do is to make sure that your MP3 player is set to not more than 60% of its maximum volume and that you limit your listening to it to up to 60 minutes or one hour per day. Or when you have to be around noisy places, protect your ears by wearing earplugs.

Also known to cause damage to the cochleas are ear candling, earwax removals, sports injuries, and dental, head and nasal passage surgeries.

Besides the mentioned disorders in the ears, there are medical conditions that are associated with tinitus. These include stress, allergies, muscle tension temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and malformation of the capillaries.

The causes of constant ringing in ears or tinnitus are, in general, medical conditions. This goes to show that the unwanted sound is a symptom and not an infection or disease of sorts in itself. Hence, it is treated according to its cause.
