The simple fact is that you know smoking is not good for you. In fact, nobody has to tell you to quit; you know you ought to quit. The irony is that when more people tell you to quit, you naturally want to quit less. The truth is that nobody can force you, make you quit and chances are you have already tried more than once to quit. Let me guess, did you smoke the ‘just one’ cigarette? Before you knew it, you probably started at ground zero again. This cycle can go on and on and many smokers would give up or at ... Read Full Story

Electronic cigarettes look, feel and taste like normal cigarettes but offer the smoker the freedom of smoking without the dangerous side effects of cigarettes. I just received my medical exam results from a life insurance policy exam, and my nicotine levels came back .38 mcg/ml - is there any way I can challenge this, or should I be pissed I have a tobacco rating when I'm not a smoker? Or will I just have to deal with higher rates for my life insurance the next three years? Well, do you have any idea why your nicotine levels are that high if you don;t smoke? Do you live with a heavy smoker, or someone who smokes at all? Do you chew any form of tobacco? Were you hanging out ... Read Full Story

ATLANTA (AP) — A smoking ban in one Colorado city led to a dramatic drop in heart attack hospitalizations within three years, a sign of just how serious a health threat secondhand smoke is, government researchers said Wednesday. The study, the longest-running of its kind, showed the rate of hospitalized cases dropped 41 percent in the three years after the ban of workplace smoking in Pueblo, Colo., took effect. There was no such drop in two neighboring areas, and researchers believe it’s a clear sign the ban was responsible. The study suggests that secondhand smoke may be a terrible and under-recognized cause of heart ... Read Full Story

For the tobacco industry there’s a lot of money to be made by getting people hooked on cigarettes and keeping them as customers for life. But smoking cessation products are increasingly sending a good portion of those revenues up in smoke. In theory anyway. Products made by pharmaceutical companies to help smokers quit have had limited success penetrating the captive audience Big Tobacco has garnered from its incredibly brand-loyal customers...

Some city landlords have begun prohibiting tenants from smoking inside their apartments, because of the dangers of second-hand smoke. A study recently found that secondhand smoke causes at least 35,000 deaths from heart disease and 3,000 deaths from lung cancer in nonsmokers nationwide each year—and New Yorkers are even more at risk because their dense urban environment. As one tobacco expert put it: "Smoke doesn’t know to stop at a doorway...

Nicotine is so desirable to many people that when they are given only the options of consuming nicotine by smoking, with its high health costs, and not consuming nicotine at all, many opt for the former. Few smokers realize that there is a third choice: non-combustion nicotine sources, such as smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes, or pharmaceutical nicotine, which eliminate almost all the risk while still allowing consumption of nicotine...
