This, our latest endeavor to produce ongoing features stacked with staunch journalism and in-depth sports coverage, is "Conversations on the Corner," where we chat with a few Major League Baseball first basemen about their counterparts in the bigs. We've selected a duo of glovers from each league, and each will help us breakdown the other first basemen in their respective divisions. Then they'll collaborate on the leftovers. It promises to be skewed, highly inacccurate, and include and a ton of material over which we'd like to not be accused of libel. So dig in. (Editor's Note: The HoG spared no expense in this project, ... Read Full Story

Jhoulys Chacin isn't quite perfect, just very good. The 21-year-old Venezuelan had not allowed a run, and only one hit, through 7 1-3 innings this spring until Arizona managed three runs off him in the third inning of the Colorado Rockies' 8-3 victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday. Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez each hit two-run homers for Colorado. Christian Colonel added a three-run shot. Evan Frey tripled in two runs for Arizona. Helton, who missed the last half of last season with a back injury, hit his second home run of the spring — in his 10th at-bat — on a 3-1 pitch ... Read Full Story

Amidst the ups and downs of playing for a small-medium market club for your career Todd Helton has been about the only constant in a Colorado Rockies uniform. Todd’s 13 year MLB career in my opinion has been Cooperstown worthy. He is a career .320 hitter, 300 plus home-runs and 500 doubles and counting. Image via Wikipedia On July 22, Todd Helton became the fastest MLB player to reach 500 doubles in a career. There have only been 49 players to previously reach the mark and 46 of them are in the Hall of Fame. Craig Biggio , Edgar Martinez and Pete Rose are ... Read Full Story

First base Rockies: Todd Helton. While he might not have the power he did earlier in his career after back surgery a year ago, he came back to lead team in batting average (.325), hits (177), walks (89) and on-base percentage (.416). He is willing to sit on a certain pitch until he gets two strikes and then has the ability to foul off good pitches, often resulting in extended at-bats. He's the team's elder statesman and still one of the best...

Well deserved! It's amazing to me that you sports writers still can't come out and say what a lousy manager Clint Hurdle was! It ruins your credibility! He was one of the worst guys to ever manage a baseball team! Bob Apodcaca still needs to go, as he has done nothing since day one. The ringing endorsements he received from Street, and Marquis don't mean very much as both these guys crapped out! Signing Street to a long term contract would be...
