Toyota Motor Corp. will boost hybrid battery production capacity as much 10 percent over earlier plans next year as orders for its Prius model rise, the Nikkei newspaper said. The automaker aims to increase manufacturing capacity to 1.1 million nickel-metal hydride cells in 2010, the paper said, without saying where it got the information. Toyota originally planned to boost production capacity by 300,000 batteries from 700,000 a year, the report said. Toyota's Prius was ranked the No. 1 selling vehicle in Japan for May, clinching the top spot in the domestic market for the first time. The revamped Prius debuted last month. Toyota Motor Corp. sold 10,915 of the hybrid cars in May in Japan, more than a five-fold increase from the previous month, according to data released Thursday by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. Toyota Motor Corp, under pressure ahead of a scheduled management shake-up, has won 75,000 orders for its new Prius hybrid, the Nikkei business daily said, promising a fierce battle for Honda Motor Co's rival Insight hybrid.
