Soon the world would be forever changed by this new mechanical marvel, the steam locomotive, the driving force behind the industrial revolution. For centuries, man had understood the potential of steam as an energy source, but it took until 1803 before Samuel Homfray was able to successfully harness that energy with his invention of the steam engine. The first successful railway followed soon after, when on March 25th, 1807, ... Read Full Story

I visited the National Railway Museum at York at the weekend to see the new exhibit (actually the return of an old one) - Duchess of Hamilton which was paraded in the art deco streamlining that she last wore in 1947. I found the following information on her from Wikipedia "6229 was built in 1938 at Crewe as the tenth member of its class and the last in the second batch of five red streamliners (the original five 6220-4 having been given a unique Caledonian blue livery), complete with silver speed cheat stripes. Down in Antonito, Colorado is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway , which runs on narrow gauge track originally laid in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande .  These days, it runs from Antonito to Chama, New Mexico, 65 miles to the south. Unfortunately, this railroad too was shut down for the winter.  However, there was plenty of rolling stock in the yard and, as a bonus, the crew was maintaining one of the old steam locomotives in the yard: #484, a 2-8-2 bearing a plate stating that it was built by Baldwin in 1925.  They had the front boiler plate open, offering ... It's nice taking those portrait style photos of the antique railroad equipment at railroad museums, but it is even nicer yet when You can take a photo that could be straight out of the historic past. Except for the outfit that the young girl in the doorway is wearing, this image of the two wooden Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Railroad wooden interurban cars....could easily have been taken on the C,A & E Aurora Branch many years ago.
