The first mechanical transportation ever made is the steam-powered locomotive . It is the very first mode of transportation which never utilizes animals or people to push or pull it in order to move it. Instead, it uses steam from burning coal which moves the pistons connected to the locomotive’s wheels.
The inventor of the first railway steam locomotive was an Englishman named Richard Trevithick in 1804. An engineer named George Stephenson from Northumberland UK designed a improved and... Read Full Story

B. Thomas Cooper - Editor Sound and Recording - blogment - National News wire - The Infinite Echo It was an era of steel and steam. It was a time of great power and wealth. Soon the world would be forever changed by this new mechanical marvel, the steam locomotive, the driving force behind the industrial revolution. For centuries, man had understood the potential of steam as an energy source, but it took until 1803 before Samuel Homfray was able to successfully harness that energy with his... Read Full Story
I visited the National Railway Museum at York at the weekend to see the new exhibit (actually the return of an old one) - Duchess of Hamilton which was paraded in the art deco streamlining that she last wore in 1947. I found the following information on her from Wikipedia "6229 was built in 1938 at Crewe as the tenth member of its class and the last in the second batch of five red streamliners (the original five 6220-4 having been given a unique Caledonian blue livery), complete with silver... Down in Antonito, Colorado is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway , which runs on narrow gauge track originally laid in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande . These days, it runs from Antonito to Chama, New Mexico, 65 miles to the south. Unfortunately, this railroad too was shut down for the winter. However, there was plenty of rolling stock in the yard and, as a bonus, the crew was maintaining one of the old steam locomotives in the yard: #484, a 2-8-2 bearing a plate stating that it was... If you want to know how a steam locomotive really work buy this book, if you are looking for anecdotes, beautifull pictures curious details etc. don't!. I am not a trains fan but I have an interest in the history of technology and I bought this book because I wanted to know how a steam locomotive works. I liked this book a lot because it delivers exactly as promised. The text is technical because the subject is technical and you need a spat of phisics to understand it all. The book explains... This is truly wonderful book following the development of the American steam locomotive to its culmination. The text is easy to read & very involving - you don't want to put it down. This is my second Brian Solomon book, & not my last. I think a "search" by author is required. The superb images seem to be a hallmark of Brian's books & compliment the text beautifully. Only three photos were lost in the crease; sad, but much less than other Rail books. Again Mr. Solomon's work is welcome on me... Read Full Story
Last weekend I was in Kamloops, British Columbia, a town on the confluence of two branches of the Thompson Rivers. Its history as a settlement goes back to fur trader days (although the First Nations were there long before then) and at the end of the 19th century it became a major railway center. Those days are past: the major employers now are a pulp mill, regional health facilities and Thompson Rivers University. The scenery is spectacular in that pared-down arid, Western way, and while I... Read Full Story
