Fireworks rise above the new $1.5 million solar powered Ferris wheel, replacing the Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel that was auctioned off on eBay for $132,400 in April, on its opening night at Pacific Park amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier on May 28, 2008 in Santa Monica, California. The old 90-foot tall Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel appeared in 105 photo shoots, 71 television commercials, 69 television shows, 28 films and 13 music videos and carried more than 3 million riders130 feet above the ocean on its 20 gondolas over the past 12 years. Like its predecessor, the world's first solar-powered, it will be powered by the sun but the new wheel, with its160,000 lights, will be 75 percent more energy efficient. The (P) mode is not a new mode on the K-7, but because of the information displayed differently on the new 3" LCD monitor, it gives the (P) mode a whole new twist. The (P) Hyper-Program Mode let's you decide if you want to shoot Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Sensitivity Priority, or whatever the camera decides is best using the Program Line. The Program Line has six different choices that can be preset in the Rec Mode. The preset lines are: Auto, ... Read Full Story

Too often, we forget that new Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras are sold every day to someone with no experience with DSLR cameras at all. Whoever we are and however good we are, we started somewhere. So I decided to dedicate the next few posts to the "Newbies", the entry-lever photographers, the shooters upgrading from a point-and-shoot camera, etc. Let's go back to the basics of photography. Upgrading from a point-and-shoot above to a DSLR below? This post will not make you an expert in photography alone. Like any other skill we learn, practice is what makes us excel in any of our ... ©Andreas Levers. All Rights Reserved If we said that Depth of Field was the range of focus found in any given picture, we would be partially right. Just as a camera is the box that captures light; it is also much more than that. A camera is made up of many parts. Depth of Field also has many parts. There are several other terms that relate to what this particular concept of design can do for us. The phrases Aperture, Shutter, ISO, Hyper Focal Distance, and Bracketing are all good to be aware of when you start to really “get into” Depth of Field. ... Read Full Story

Let’s end this exposure discussion by walking through the process I used for taking the landscape picture shown below. I'll base my exposure on histogram results and the second question photographers must address to determine the correct exposure (depth of field and subject motion considerations). This picture taken at Zion National Park utilizes depth of field that is measured in miles -- from the blades of grass in the foreground to the farthest mountain top. In terms of densities the full range of deep blacks to the whitest parts of the clouds require a careful exposure to ensure that both extremes retain the detail ... Read Full Story

Today's photography lesson is choosing a mode to shoot in. Most cameras have a number of shooting modes that dictate what exposure decisions will be made by the camera and what decisions will be left up to you. The first task when approaching a shot is choosing the appropriate shooting mode. The subject matter or style of shooting often dictates a shooting mode. For example, you may be shooting an event where the light is very low, therefore you will need to choose a mode that allows for control of shutter speed, to guarantee sharp images. Maybe you're in a situation with good lighting ... Read Full Story

JTB Corp., Japan's largest travel agency, plans to close hundreds of domestic outlets amid a global economic slump and an increasing shift in demand for Internet-based sales, company officials said Thursday. The company, which marked its first group net loss in four years for the year that ended in March, may close up to 200, or about 20 percent, of its existing 940 or so agencies, including those run by group companies, the officials said...

Honesty: I never, in my wildest dreams, expected your slow shutter photography to be this crazy-awesome. But 74 of you turned in some humbling shots for this week's Shooting Challenge. First Place "Smoke Signal was taken with an Olympus sp350 set to night scene. This was taken with a color changing led rave light about six inches long by 1/2 inch wide that I wrapped with electrical tape to create a candy cane stripe. I placed the light on my...

I'd venture a guess that it's neither neon nor fiber optic. It's probably EL wire. [en.wikipedia.org] It'd be forgivable to confuse EL with neon or fiber, except that EL is about eight thousand times more awesome because it's cheap, easy to work with (sorry, neon), bright (sorry, fiber), and runs forever off of a couple of double-A batteries. For this week's Shooting Challenge, we're stepping away from fall leaves and hamburgers for the moment and moving to methodology. Even if you're no Picasso, we want to see what you can do with a slow shutter. The official challenge: "Slow Shutter." As always, interpret the theme however you'd like to give us the best shot that you can. For a little inspiration, check out the photos by Barry Underwood. And if you've never shot long exposure...
