Steelers Are Battered and Bruised
Filed under: Steelers, AFC North, Pittsburgh
If losing to the Cardinals wasn’t bad enough, Pittsburgh left the game with multiple injuries as well.
Pittsburgh had made it through the first three games with few injuries, but Casey Hampton (hamstring), Chris Hoke (neck), Bryant McFadden (ankle) and Troy Polamalu (abdomen) were all knocked out on Sunday. While Polamalu is the name most people notice right off the bat, if neither Hampton or Hoke can play next week, the Steelers are in a desperate situation at nose tackle. Third-stringer Travis Kirschke is not really a nose tackle–he’s a defensive end filling in. Teams don’t have to double-team him (unlike Hampton) which means that the Steelers linebackers have to wade through blockers. If that wasn’t enough, Pittsburgh would have to bring Scott Paxson off the practice squad just to ensure there’s someone to spell Kirschke.
The Steelers haven’t allowed a 100-yard rusher in 29 games, but if Hampton and Hoke can’t play next week, that streak could be in serious jeopardy.
