SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Jason Marquis became Major League Baseball's first 12-game winner this season when he led the Colorado Rockies to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Marquis (12-6), in addition to a strong eight innings on the mound, drove in two runs with a double in a four-run sixth inning. "I haven't swung a bat in the past week or so with the All-Star break, and I hadn't taken (batting practice) this road trip yet," Marquis told reporters. "I felt good, and I just tried to see it and hit it as hard as I could." The All-Star ... Read Full Story

San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy is expected to miss at least one month with an injured ankle, and may not be back until after baseball's All-Star break. "I was getting treatment and we were getting by," said Peavy, who was scratched from his start on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels after an MRI showed that a tendon in his right ankle was torn. Peavy had made his previous two starts with the ankle taped. "Up until yesterday, I thought it was manageable," he said. "It could have gotten ugly if we didn't take the action that we did." Peavy, a right-hander, will ... Read Full Story

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - This year the star closer for the New York Yankees Panamanian Mariano Rivera surpassed Lee Smith to take sole possession of the #2 spot on the all-time career saves list. Sitting at #1 of that same list is the star closer for the San Diego Padres Trevor Hoffman. Trevor Hoffman should still be a Padre. Yes. He may have lost some velocity on his fastball and his change-up is may not be as effective as before but no one can deny the leadership and presence he brought to the clubhouse. He saved 30 games out of 34 chances on a 99 loss club. Hoffy would have been the perfect mentor to Heath Bell . Hoffy's role could have been a closer/set up man, gradually grooming Bell to be the closer. But then again, the Padres are a complete mess so saving games may not have come that often in 2009. There are ... Read Full Story

The Trevor Hoffman era has officially ended in San Diego. Hoffman agreed to a one-year contract worth $6 million on Thursday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced. Hoffman can make an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses, based on games finished. The 41-year-old right-hander had pitched for the Padres since 1993, becoming the face of the franchise after Tony Gwynn retired. Hoffman converted 30 of 34 chances last season, increasing his saves record to 554. Hoffman became a free agent but still hoped to hear the gongs ... Read Full Story

AP Photo White Sox GM Kenny Williams always seems to have some deal in the works, so it's no surprise that the Sox are involved in some of the early trade chatter during the off-season. His boldest move last season was landing Jake Peavy from the cash-strapped San Diego Padres, and he might use the Padres' financial situation to try to land another of their star players. Preliminary talks suggest a three-way trade which would send Sox...
