Turkey Cooking Times Per Pound

Turkey cooking times and thaw times.
Note that the below suggested thawing and cooking times for roasted turkeys are guidelines only.  Each turkey will cook slightly differently depending on the relative freeze and initial conditions, as well as on the stove.  Be sure to thaw a frozen bird well in advance of Thanksgiving!  Happy holidays.

Approximate Turkey Thawing Times

  • 8 to 12 pounds: 4 to 6 hours in cold water* or 1 to 2 days in refrigerator
  • 10 to 16 pounds: 6 to 8 hours in cold water* or 2 to 3 days in refrigerator
  • 16 to 20 pounds: 8 to 10 hours in cold water* or 3 to 4 days in refrigerator
  • 20 to 24 pounds: 10 to 12 hours in cold water* or 4 to 5 days in refrigerator

Approximate Turkey Roasting Times

  • 8 to 12 pounds - Unstuffed: 2 3/4 to 3 hours; Stuffed: 3 to 3 1/2 hours
  • 12 to 14 pounds - Unstuffed: 3 to 3 3/4 hours; Stuffed: 3 1/2 to 4 hours
  • 14 to 18 pounds - Unstuffed: 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 hours; Stuffed: 4 to 4 1/4 hours
  • 18 to 20 pounds - Unstuffed: 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hours; Stuffed: 4 1/4 to 4 3/4 hours
  • 20 to 24 pounds - Unstuffed: 4 1/2 to 5 hours; Stuffed: 4 3/4 to 5 1/4 hours
