From the start of the season, North Carolina's players and coaches knew their success largely would be determined by how well their talented defense carried the burden for a young offense. Duke, UNC share ACC preseason favorite honors

Defending national champion North Carolina and Duke are co-favorites to win the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils shared first place in voting at Sunday's ACC Operation Basketball, the first tie in the four-decade history of the preseason event. Duke earned 25 of 48 first-place votes from media members and finished with 545 points, while North Carolina earned 20 first-place votes and also finished with 545 points. Ryan Houston rushed for three touchdowns and Quan Sturdivant returned a fumble 49 yards for a score, one of six turnovers forced by North Carolina during a 42-12 rout of Georgia Southern on Saturday.
