BOSTON (Reuters) - Researchers in Italy said on Wednesday they have developed a test that identifies most people with autoimmune pancreatitis, which could make it easier for doctors to distinguish it from pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest types of cancer. But the method is not perfect. While it gave a correct diagnosis in 94 percent of cases, 5 percent of people with pancreatic cancer falsely tested positive for the less-serious inflammatory condition. "Therefore (it) cannot be used alone to distinguish autoimmune pancreatitis from pancreatic cancer," Dr Luca Frulloni of the University of Verona and colleagues wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine. ... Types of lung cancer, also known as the bronchogenice carcinomas are generally classified into two categories: small cell lung cancer (CPCM) and cancer non-small cell lung (NSCLC). This classification is based on microscopic appearance of tumor cells themselves. These two types of cancers grow and spread in different ways and have different treatment options. Getting the type of pulmonary cancer is of particular importance. Approximately 20% of lung cancer cases are detected CPCM; this form is very aggressive and has a very high growth rate. CPCM is closely related to smoking, only 1% of cases these tumors occurring in nonsmokers. CPCM rapidly develop metastases ... Read Full Story

Most often bones are the locations of tumors that are the consequence of metastasis of the cancer present in another organ like the breasts, lungs or the prostate. Cancers that originate in the bone such as primary bone cancer are quite rare occurrences. Bone tumors could be benign or malignant in nature. Benign bone tumors are more prevalent, however both kinds could proliferate leading to compression of healthy, normal bone tissue and sop up or substitute it with anomalous tissues. However, benign tumors do not proliferate and are atypically life-menacing. The most prevalent form of bone cancer is osteosarcoma that develops in newly formed ... Read Full Story

Cancer Research, 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-09-1595 Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a fatal thoracic malignancy, the epigenetics of which are poorly defined. We performed high-throughput methylation analysis covering 6,157 CpG islands in 20 MPMs and 20 lung adenocarcinomas. Newly identified genes were further analyzed in 50 MPMs and 56 adenocarcinomas via quantitative methylation-specific PCR. Targets of histone H3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) and genetic alterations were also assessed in MPM cells by chromatin immunoprecipitation arrays and comparative genomic hybridization arrays. An average of 387 genes (6.3%) and 544 genes (8.8%) were hypermethylated in MPM and adenocarcinoma, respectively. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that the two malignancies have characteristic ... Read Full Story
