Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic artists, art directors, and clerical workers. Until the Digital Age typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users.

There are quite a few faces that have non-OpenType versions with both lining and oldstyle figures, in separate fonts—especially FontFonts. I’ve published a few typefaces, prior to OpenType, where the default is oldstyle figures e.g. Bodoni Egyptian, Paradigm, Preface. There are also many OpenType fonts that have oldstyle figures as the default.
