The Labour Party claimed a comfortable by-election win on Friday was an endorsement of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in his likely final poll test before the general election. Labour candidate Willie Bain won almost three times as many votes as his closest rival from the Scottish National Party (SNP), to keep the party's firm grip on its Glasgow North East stronghold in Scotland's biggest city.
